the white spots in the field
are swans
upon closer inspection

the red lines are, perhaps
irrigation hose or
rich earth, plowed loose
or ink distilled
from pungent berries
sketched outlines
of what will become
more clear

we are working against
distance here
and desire (swans
rather than…
) will turn
plastic swaddled bales
to great sleeping
birds

perforated tubing
to the practiced calligraphy
of absent giants
